My husband and I are arriving in Milan 15 May and have 6 days to explore the area before embarking on a cruise in Civitavechia on 21 May.
We are debating whether we spend any time at all in Milan, conversing all our days for Tuscany. Or if we should take a day for Milan, a day for Belagio, and then the remaining 4.5 days in Tuscany.
If we drove directly to Tuscany area from Milan on the morning of May 15, what town would you recommend as a central hub for exploration? Would you recommend one single town or perhaps split our time between two?

What time are you arriving in Milan? I’m asking as I would spend there half a day, maybe to have a lunch in the town’s center and do some shopping! Then I would soon move to the stupendous Como Lake. Bellagio is lovely, I’ve stayed there more than once. The Lake is a must see in Italy. You may spend there one night and one full day before heading on to my beloved beautiful Tuscany
Well, coming to Tuscany, the best base I recommend for staying 5 days is the Chianti region, renowned for its typical and scenic Tuscan countryside and the fine wines. Situated between Florence and Siena, Chianti is the perfect starting point for great day trips to the most beautiful Tuscan sights.
In Chianti there are many nice villages that can be ideal for staying, like the charming medieval hill town of Castellina in Chianti, but you may opt also to stay amid the countryside. Here is a full list of the best day trips you can make from Chianti, like Florence, Siena, and San Gimignano.
The stunning Val d’Orcia countryside, my favorite part of Tuscany, is at about 1 hour and half distance. You may even spend there 1 night or 2 if you love to. The landscape of Val d’Orcia is absolutely amazing! Its hill towns, like Motalcino, Bagno Vignoni, and Pienza are among the most beautiful village in Italy!
