I have enjoyed all the information on your web site. It is very nice and useful. Thank you for compiling this information.
Do you have any advice for first time visitors of Tuscany (and Italy itself) who have only a few days? My wife, teenage daughter and I will be visiting in August for 7 days (I know, not much time).
Our heart is set on Tuscany. However, we are unable to decide how to split time between sights. We have considered Florence, Siena (would like to avoid being there during Palio) and Cinque Terre. In order to cover all that it seems like the bulk of time would be spent traveling. So picking a place and day trips seems appealing.
On the other hand maybe we should just stick with Rome and take day trips from there and save Tuscany for another visit.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Venice, Rome, the Cinque Terre, and Tuscany are among the must see destinations when visiting Italy. In fact I also include them in my suggested tour through Italy.
In 7 days you can pretty see many sights, but of course much depends how many places you’re wiling to change as a base. Maybe you might do the Cinque Terre + Tuscany, or Tuscany + Rome.
Tuscany is beautiful and has lots of amazing sights to admire; Florence, San Gimignano, Siena, Chianti and the Val d’Orcia are among them.

Chianti and Val d’Orcia, though different from one another, are the 2 most scenic territories in the countryside, and both are prestigious wine areas. Val d’Orcia is particularly fascinating also thanks to its unique hill towns like Montalcino, Bagno Vignoni, and Pienza.
San Gimignano can be a great central base in Tuscany from where to take day trips, or also Siena and its countryside.
