One day trip between Rome and Siena and back

Hi – we need your advice on how best to plan a one day trip from Rome to Siena and back (overnight in Siena). I am keen to squeehze two awesome meals and some sightseeing. Wondering whether we are better off having lunch at Montepulciano or Montalcino. Should we stay overnight in Siena or San Gim. Any hotel recommendations and also any restaurant suggestions. Thanks a lot

I’m happy to give some tips
Among the best restaurants in Montepulciano I recommend Ristorante la Grotta, that faces the beautiful church of San Biagio, and Osteria del Conte, located near the wonderful Piazza Grande. 
In Montalcino, I recommend while another great place to eat is the beautiful village of Pienza, between Montalcino and Montepulciano.
Staying in the historical centers of both San Gimignano and Siena would be an experience, their atmosphere is unique. Depends on what you prefer, San Gimignano is a small village, very quiet at night, Siena is a larger town but still enchanting. 
Among the best places to stay in San Gimignano take a look here, while in Siena I recommend Campo Regio Relais.
