Discover Maremma

By 30 Ottobre 2011 Traveling in Tuscany

The wonderful Maremma, a vast area covering the province of Grosseto, is one of the most beautiful and interesting parts of Tuscany, farther south of the region.

Maremma means wild nature and unique landscapes; it offers an incredible mixture of ancient civilizations, enduring local traditions, unforgettable panoramas, thermal baths (Petriolo), and a lot of nature reserves (Natural Park of Uccellina, Burano, and Orbetello).

All of this is accompanied by a unique culinary tradion and great wines.

Maremma was a part of Tuscany that I actually knew little, so, when I visited it for the first time, it was a real surprise 🙂

Each visit to this region is a totally new experience with new pleasant discoveries. The landscape of Maremma is incredibly varied: there are long stretches of deserted sandy beaches with lush pine forests and crystal clear waters (Marina di Alberese), beautiful uncontaminated islands (Giglio and Giannutri islands), and hilltop medieval villages and austere castles.

Tuscan Coast in Maremma

Few other parts of Tuscany and Italy have so many charming villages facing the coast and the deep blue sea; Castiglione della Pescaia and its medieval fortress, the fishing village of Talamone with its ancient Spanish castle, and the lovely fortified village of Capalbio.

If you then move a bit in the inland part of Maremma, other lovely ancient hilltop towns will capture your attention: Massa Marittima and its marvellous Duomo, Scansano, Magliano, Scarlino and Tirli. They all have their origins in the Etruscan and Roman Times, and are wonderful examples of Medieval architecture.

There are really countless of fun activities to enjoy in Maremma all year long, also thanks to splendid trekking and mountain bike itineraries that take you to wonderful natural sceneries, and to fantastic excursions on horseback.

Amongst the main and famous seaside destinations, there are Porto Santo Stefano, Punta Ala, Porto Ercole and all the area surrounding the beautiful Monte Argentario.

Maremma is a unique place boasting a special and inviting atmosphere for all visitors at all times of the year: sea, nature, culture, and history form a perfect and interesting ensamble.
