travel tips to tuscany First Trip To Italy

Hi Elena, We really love the website, and we appreciate all the great information.  We are planning our first trip to Italy, in June of 2019.  We have two boys, 11 and 9 that will be coming along with us.  We love wine, food, art, history, you know, all the great things that Italy has to offer.  The current itinerary is, start in Rome for 3 nights, 8 nights in Tuscany region, 4 nights in Venice, and 3 nights in Milan.  While in Tuscany, we will want to see Florence, Siena, Pisa, and Cinque Terre. Other than that, we would love to explore small hilltop villages, away from the tourists(as much as possible), and enjoy great food, wine, and history.  We are torn between where to base in the Tuscany region, and whether or not to rent a car.  I know you have been asked this a lot, but we are looking for farmhouses/vrbo type accommodations while in Tuscany. We have looked at a couple places in Sesto Florentino as a base while in Tuscany. We may try and do day trips out to Orbetello, and maybe Isola Del Giglio.  With all that being said, what recommendations do you have for a base, and whether or not we should rent a car while in Tuscany.  Maybe San Gimignano as a base?  Again, we want to explore the main \”tourist\” attractions and cities, but get away from it all, and really enjoy the scenery, food and wine. Again, thank you very much for all the tips!!

Hi Chris! Happy to hear you like my website! and thanks a lot for asking tips, I’m happy to help 🙂
8 nights in Tuscany is the perfect time to visit this wonderful region of Italy, that really has lot to offer. First of all: Renting a car or not to tour Tuscany? yes, absolutely! Of course this aspect always depends if one is willing or not to drive, and like or dislike driving. But Tuscany is best visited having a car to tour around; you spare time, visit many more things, and have more time and freedom. You may decide to base in a central location in Tuscany, maybe Siena or San Gimignano, in any case in the countryside and hills surrounding both cities. This way you can have the peace and tranquilly one is always looking for at the end of the day. You may even decide to stay some days in a location and others at another.
Honestly, Sesto Fiorentino, is very chaotic and not a particularly attractive city in Tuscany, there are countless other stunning places to stay, especially in the hills near Siena or Florence.
Siena is a great base, thanks to its central location in Tuscany and for its outstanding landscape, especially on the south of it, in the Val d’Orcia area. The same is for San Gimignano, again a great base. Both areas are full of beautiful farmhouses/vrbo type accommodations.
For any other suggestions, I’m here 🙂
ciao from Florence, elena

Thank you so much Elena!! We will definitely plan on renting a car while we are there. We currently have a hotel in Siena(Four Points) on hold for three nightshade well, but we were thinking that maybe we would cancel it, and do a VRBO for the 8 nights. We were just trying to minimize the packing/unpacking with the kids. Maybe we should keep those three nights, and look for a different VRBO in another party of Tuscany for the five nights. Do you know the location of the hotel? Is it in a good location?
