Hi Elana,
we have made reservations to stay in Florence for the first 4 nights of our 11 night total Italy trip. The plan was to then travel to Sorrento for 4 nights there and then to Rome for 3 nights and ultimately depart from Rome to fly home.
as the plans go, I’m just not convinced about the whole 4 nights in sorrento…
I realize that is a long way to go, so 3 night at least is the way to go.
i am inquiring about OTHER, beautiful, interesting, and hassle free smaller, towns in which we might stay for 2 and 2 nights each.
My daughter, 18, this is her high school graduation gift, wants to see the sea. So a less touristy, costal area might be great……
all of our travel will be by train or bus, so logistics are key.
and, like I say we will be starting in Florence and will have 4 night before well need to be in Rome.

Let’s come to your travel plan:
– 4 nights in Florence, visit Florence’s best attractions and make some day trips using public transportation, I recommend visiting San Gimignano and the Chianti area in particular.
– Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast are beautiful, but since you rely on public transports, actually the journey from Florence to Sorrento is really too long and not recommended.
There are OTHER beautiful destinations on the coast both in Tuscany and in Liguria, north of Tuscany. One of them is certainly the coast of the Maremma area south of Tuscany, characterized by beautiful beaches, unspoilt nature and breathtaking views. In Maremma I particularly like Castiglion della Pescaia and the beautiful Monte Argentario. Here is a list of the most beautiful beaches in Tuscany.
In Liguria are the famous and beautiful Cinque Terre, with scenic landscape by the sea, enchanting fishing villages, and clear waters. The Cinque Terre can be conveniently reached by train from Florence; you can get there even more easily than the destinations in Maremma.
A further option on the Tuscan Coast is the nice Castiglioncello, a less touristy destination that you can reach from Florence by train.
By the way, which month are you visiting?
– I would spend the 2 other nights in Siena, one of my most beloved Italian medieval hill towns. That makes sense as you travel by train or bus, and Siena is quite well served by public transports. Siena, so famous for its Palio race, is all to explore, a real treasure, take a look here. From Siena there are lots of spectacular sights to visit, especially in the Val d’Orcia, one of the most beautiful and suggestive of all landscapes in Tuscany and Italy! Timeless villages, abbeys, never-ending fields and gentle hills, incredible food and superb wines. Montalcino, Pienza, and Montepulciano are real gems! Here you find a full list of the best day tours you can visit in the area starting from Siena.
As Italy, and particularly Tuscany, are best traveled by car, you may also considered taking some organized tours like the ones here. That will save time!
