Good day. Thank you for the lovely website! My husband and I are planning to visit Italy in July/Aug. We have 5 days and 5 nights to spend in Tuscany – 21-25 July 2015. We thought of doing a self-drive through Tuscany. Would you recommend that? We would also like to know whether we need to pre-book accommodation of can we drive and stop/sleep were we find a beautiful location. Is it to busy that time of year? Also, where to you suggest we go/sleep over. We are travelling from Venice to Tuscany (20/7) by train/public transport and again from Tuscany to Rome by train (26/7). A self-drive through Tuscany is the best way to experience the real feel of Tuscany! That time of the year can be quite busy for some of the most popular destinations in the region, otherwise you should not have any problems to sleep when you find a beautiful location. I would pre-book anyway.
Considering this is your 1st visit, here follows the best 5 days itinerary in Tuscany:
2 Days in Florence: Spend one full day in Florence and pass the night there. You will arrive from Venice to Santa Maria Novella train station, that is located in the town’s center. Florence is beautiful, so rich in art, culture and beautiful things to see! The following day take a train to reach Pisa and spend half a day there; Pisa is the town with the famous Leaning Tower and the amazing masterpiece that is Piazza dei Miracoli.
1 Day in Chianti and San Gimignano On leaving Florence with the car, direct toward the famous wine area lying between Florence and Siena, Chianti! Famous for its wineries, vineyards, forests, castles, and green hills, the area is all to explore especially taking a scenic drive along the Chiantigiana road. Leave Chianti and head west in direction of San Gimignano, the fabulous medieval hill town with towers.
1 Day in Siena The medieval town of the Palio race is incredibly beautiful, I highly recommend you spend one full day there exploring the city’s amazing sights.
1 Day in Val d’Orcia Leave Siena to move more south of Tuscany, in the scenic area known by the name of Val d’Orcia, a beautiful natural park that will enchant you with its gentle hills, splendid hill towns, abbeys, incredible food and unique wines. Among its most intriguing villages are Montalcino, Pienza, and Bagno Vignoni.
