Elena.

Hope u are well. I’m planning a surprise trip to Tuscany for my wife birthday. Traveling from NYC for a week 8-27 thru 9-2. We’ve been to Florence, Rome, Venice, Milan & Sicily but want to explore Tuscany for its beauty, culture, people, food/wine, beaches etc. I’m thinking it makes sense to base in Siena and rent a car ? We’d be happy to spend overnights in multiple towns and would enjoy a spa treatment or two along the way.
Would be appreciative of any ideas you may have.

Mille grazie !
Tim

Hi Tim,
I’m well, thank you! A surprise trip to Tuscany is really a fantastic gift
Renting a car is the best option to explore Tuscany and all its beauty, and in any case one is moving by car, recommend basing in Siena and its wonderful countryside. You may spend 2 or 3 nights in Siena center, that is incredibly beautiful and has a lot to offer! Here is a post dedicated to using Siena a home base in Tuscany, where you can find a list of the best day trips to make from there.
Consider spending other days exploring the delightful villages of the Val d’Orcia, especially Montalcino, Montepulciano, and Pienza. This amazing region south of Siena is probably the most impressive in Tuscany for its stunning landscape, its gentle hills are unforgettable. Here are also produced some of the best Italian wines, while food is extraordinary. While in Val d’Orcia also take the time to visit the ancient hill town of Cortona, that enjoys a never ending vista!
North the Valdorcia are the scenic Crete Senesi, characterized by a beautiful peculiar landscape and charming medieval hamlets. I also recommend you drive a bit further south the region to go visiting Pitigliano (around 1 hour and half distance), one of the most striking sights in Italy! Near Pitigliano are Sorano and Sovana, incredibly beautiful and suggestive villages that are really worth visiting.
The thermal baths in Bagno Vignoni are fantastic and here you can enjoy great spa treatments That’s one of the most romantic and suggestive small towns in Tuscany
