Siena to Rome by car

We are driving from Siena to Rome on a Sunday. Plan to leave early and spend 9-10 hours making our way to Rome. Looking for advice for best stops/scenic drive along way as we make our way south. We plan to return to Tuscany next year to spend 5-7 days. We view this drive as an appetizer for that trip. Appreciate your help

Ciao Raymond,
Thanks a lot for contacting me
The drive from from Siena to Rome offers so much to see and do!
You may get an idea of the fantastic destinations to stop on your way by taking a look at my article on driving from Rome to Tuscany and back. Starting from Siena I wouldn’t take the autostrada but follow the ancient Via Cassia that passes through the most fascinating countryside of Tuscany amid amazing hill towns, as I explain in this post.
The stops I would not miss are Montalcino, Pienza, Bagno Vignoni, and then continuing south you may want to take some deviations to Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano or to Orvieto, and then to the Bolsena Lake and Viterbo. Take a look at the posts and let me know

Grazie, Elena. Very Helpful. If we forgo Orvieto and take the deviation to Pitigliano, etc, are there any special stops along the west shoreline of Bolsena Lake that we need to be on the lookout for.

The Bolsena Lake is really beautiful. Staring from Orvieto in direction of Pitigliano and passing from the northern part of the lake you may certainly want to pay a visit to the lovely medieval villages of Bolsena, right facing the lake, and Grotte di Castro, a bit north the lake. Both are beautiful and with very ancient Etruscan origins, both offering museums with archeological finds and scenic views.
Let me know if you need any other tip,
