Day trips in Tuscany from Siena

Hi Elena,

Thanks so much for your advice. My wife and I will be spending 3 nights/4 days in Siena (May 31 – June 3) and have rented a car. We’re trying to figure out ideal day trips, and so far have two day trips planned.
1. Montalcino (+Brunello wine tasting), Val d’Orcia and Montepulciano. Would you recommend doing all that in one day? Also, any recommendations for wineries or wine bars to visit? Must-try restaurants?
2. Chianti area, San Gimignano, Montenggioni. Same questions: is this too much for one day? Any recommendations for wineries/wine bars/restaurants?
One last question: we also love hiking and biking. Any recommendations for half-day hikes/biking trips from Siena?
Thanks so much!

Ciao Leor,
happy to give some more advice
My compliments for basing in Siena! Dedicate to Siena one full day.
Val d’Orcia is the name of the vast beautiful area south of Siena that includes many sights like Montalcino, Pienza, Bagno Vignoni, Montepulciano, and San Quirico d’Orcia.
As for the day trips, the first day I would do Montalcino with Brunello wine tasting, Pienza, and Montepulciano. You can actually do all in one day as these villages are small, but also take your time and don’t be in a hurry to see everything. After Pienza, if you still have a bit of time, then pay a brief visit to Bagno Vignoni, really a peculiar and beautiful place!
A great and beautiful winery to visit for Brunello is the Ciacci Piccolomini, where you can taste your wine in the charming panoramic terrace.
As for your second day, again all is doable, first visit Monteriggioni, then San Gimignano, to which I would dedicate a bit more time, and then head toward Chianti, where I recommend you adrming the panorama while driving and have just 1 or 2 stops at some great winery, like Badia a Passignano or Badia a Coltibuono, both also great restaurants!
Take a look at these suggested biking trails from Siena, and to these hiking trails
I remain at your dispsal,
Enjoy your Sunday!
