Day trips from Siena

We will be spending 7 nights in Siena at the end of September and are trying to plan day trips with Siena as our base.  We are renting a car, so we don’t need to worry about public transportation.
These are the cities we are planning to visit, but would love your advice on which ones we can do on the same days and which order we should go in.  We would be leaving Siena in the mornings and returning each evening.

  1. Florence (where else should we stop on the way there or back?)
  2. San Gimignano, Volterra…
  3. Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano…
  4. Chianti – Greve, Panzano… ???
  5. Orvieto, Civita di Bagnoregio…  is this too far for a day trip?

Thank you!

Ciao Angie and thanks for your question Siena is the best place as a home base in Tuscany when one has a car to tour around.

Day 1: As you’ll be probably be a bit tired for the journey, you may want to take your time and visit San Gimignano and Volterra at your ease.

Day 2: The visit to Florence will require a whole day.

Day 3: Chianti. To reach Florence from Siena, there’s a road driving through Chianti on the Via Chiantigiana road, a really scenic drive passing though the wonderful countryside of the Chianti region; this is one of the most beautiful drives of Italy. The route passes through the hill towns of Chianti, like Castellina in Chianti. You may start driving on the Via Chiantigiana and take some detours to the most beautiful sights of Chianti.

Day 4: The Val d’Orcia area, probably the most beautiful of all parts of Tuscany…Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano, Bagno Vignoni… get up early in the morning.

Day 5: Orvieto is only at 1 hour and half from Siena, so I’d visit it, from Orvieto you can then visit Civita di Bagnoregio (40 minutes from Orvieto), or head west to take a look over to the amazing Pitigliano and then head north towards Siena passing through the Val d’Orcia. The drive maybe tiring but it’s worth doing.

Let me know if you need any other suggestion I’m happy to help.

Enjoy your trip to beautiful Tuscany!
