Hi –
My name is Mark, my wife and I are going to be in Florence starting March 3 and flying back to the states on March 12. I’ve been to several parts of Italy but became intrigued by Florence after reading a Dan Brown novel. Anyway, I have flights booked but thats about it. Was thinking of spending 3,4,5 in Florence and soaking in the museums, etc. then maybe Siena, Chianti, some place by the sea? Trying to break up the trip in a few spots. Special time of year for both of us, birthdays and anniversary all in same month so certainly leaing on the romantic side of places to see and stay.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Dear Eric,
Thanks a lot for contacting me, I’m happy to give some advice on this special occasion for you and your wife
Florence is incredibly beautiful! A town full of art treasures, a real open air museum, not to mention its wonderful shops. Here is a mini-guide to Florence’s top sights, while here you can find my suggestions for day trips to make from Florence.
While in Florence you’ll not need a car to move around, but I suggest you rent it after leaving the city. You may then move to Chianti and then to the wonderful art town of Siena, south of Florence.
Siena is simply beautiful and cannot miss from any itinerary in Italy. Siena itself offers a lot to its visitor, have a look at this guide of Siena’s main attractions. From Siena you can easily depart and have fantastic day trips to some of the most beautiful areas of Tuscany.
Other nights could be spent in the beautiful villages of the Val d’Orcia area, like Pienza, Bagno Vignoni,Montalcino, or Montepulciano. The wonderful Val d’Orcia area south of Siena is probably the most beautiful part of all Tuscany for unique landscape made of isolated farmhouses, castles, soft undulating hills, solitary cypress trees, stunning medieval hill towns. That’s also one of the most renowned areas of Tuscany for its fine wines! While in Val d’Orcia you may visit the wonderful hill town of Cortona, that offers a breathtaking panorama!
All the area really offers a lot! Also the Crete Senesi are very interesting to visit. While there I also suggest you drive south to reach the area of Pitigliano, one of the most spectacular and peculiar town in Italy, rising right out from the rocks! Next to Pitigliano, also take the chance to visit the small and incredibly characteristic villages of Sorano and Sovana, their atmosphere is really suspended in time, time here seems to have stopped. It will take about 1 hour and half to reach Pitigliano, depending on where you’re staying in Val d’Orcia.
Bagno Vignoni, a tiny hamlet is really fantastic! it has a special atmosphere, also thanks to its ancient thermal pool from the Renaissance. That’s one of the most romantic towns in Tuscany, you may stop there to enjoy its fantastic thermal baths.
